Questions, answered plainly.

Most answers are below. If yours isn't, write to us: every email is read by the person who builds Becoming.

hello@becoming.pics

It helps to say which phone you have and the app's version, shown at the foot of Settings. You can also write from inside the app: Settings › Help & about › Contact support.

A new phone

Bring every photo.

Nothing is uploaded, so nothing moves to a new phone by itself. A backup folder carries everything, and it's free.

  1. On the old phone, open Settings › Your photos › Your archive and tap Export everything. Pick a folder, ideally one your cloud app already syncs, or copy it to a computer.
  2. Keep it current, if you like. After an export, Becoming can keep that folder up to date as you take new photos.
  3. On the new phone, install Becoming and, the first time you open it, tap Restore from a backup and choose the folder.
  4. If you have Plus, sign in to Google Play with the same account, open Settings › Get Becoming Plus and tap Restore purchase.

A restore adds your projects as they were; it never merges two copies into one. The folder holds every photo at full size with a manifest.json beside them, so it is readable by anything that opens a JPEG, not only by Becoming.

Your data

Delete it, for good.

There is no account, so there is nothing to close. What Becoming holds is on your phone, and you delete it there.

  • One photo: open it and tap Delete this photo.
  • One project: in the project's settings, Delete project.
  • Everything: Settings › Delete everything removes every photo and project, your reminders and the app's other settings, at once. Your choice of light or dark stays.
  • To the last byte: uninstall Becoming, or clear its storage in Android's Settings › Apps › Becoming › Storage. That also clears videos waiting to be shared and any song you picked, which sit in the app's cache.

We keep no copy of anything, so deleting is permanent. Export first if you want to keep your photos. Folders you exported to are yours, and are left as they are.

Off the phone

  • The purchase record. RevenueCat holds an anonymous record of whether this install bought Plus. To have it removed, email hello@becoming.pics; if you bought Plus, include the Google Play order number from your receipt (it starts with GPA), so we can find it. Deleting it doesn't cancel a subscription, so cancel in Google Play first.
  • Google's diagnostics. The diagnostics ML Kit sends are held by Google, under its own privacy policy, with an ID made for this installation of the app rather than for you.
  • Emails. If you wrote to us, ask and we'll delete the conversation.

The privacy policy has the detail.

Plus

Cancel, or get a refund.

  • Cancel the yearly plan in the Google Play app › your profile › Payments & subscriptions › Subscriptions › Becoming. If you subscribed, Settings › Becoming Plus in the app opens the same page. Plus stays until the end of the year you paid for, and nothing more is charged.
  • During a free trial, cancel before it ends and you pay nothing.
  • Uninstalling doesn't cancel. A subscription belongs to your Google account, not to the app on the phone.
  • Forever is one payment. There is nothing to cancel.
  • Refunds follow Google Play's refund policy. Within 48 hours of buying, you may be able to get a refund from Google Play directly. After that, write to us and we'll help: we can refund a Google Play order ourselves.
  • In the EU and the UK you can change your mind within 14 days of subscribing to the yearly plan. Forever is delivered at once, and buying it means agreeing to that, which ends the 14-day right, as Google Play's terms say.

If you stop paying, you keep every project, photo, edit and carousel you made. The terms say it in full.

Getting started

Can I use photos I've already taken?

Yes, and that's the best way to start. Pick them with Android's photo picker. Becoming reads each one's date, shows you which will line up before it copies anything, and makes your first video right away. Importing is free, always.

What if my photos weren't taken the same way each time?

Becoming finds your face in each photo, or your shoulders and hips for a body shot, then moves, scales and turns the photo to put you in the same place. Plants, rooms and other things line up on the framing you shot.

It won't always find you. A photo in the dark or side-on may not line up, and Becoming says so instead of hiding a jump in your video. To reframe the whole video by hand, crop is part of Plus.

Does it change how I look?

No. It never retouches you: no smoothing, no slimming, no beauty filter. It moves, scales and turns each photo so you sit in the same spot, and evens out the light. Looks, like film grain or monochrome, are a colour grade over the whole film.

Can I track more than one thing?

Your first project is free, with no limit on its photos, and a new year simply carries on in the same project. Running more than one at once, a beard and a plant say, is part of Plus. If you ever stop paying, you keep every project you made, and each one keeps taking photos.

Do I have to take a photo every day? What if I miss one?

No. Missing a day doesn't wipe anything. Two rest days a month are built in and used by themselves, and today never breaks your run. Going away? Switch on Away, and those days count as away, not missed. An older photo added later counts on the day it was taken.

Will it fill my phone with notifications?

Reminders are off until you switch them on, and that's when Becoming asks to send notifications. You get one a day, at a time you pick, and nothing on a day you've already taken your photo. If you start ignoring it, it backs off to every other day, then once a week. The Sunday recap has its own switch.

Can I do it with a friend? Will they see my photos?

Yes, that's a pact. Agree a week, a fortnight, a month or ninety days with a friend and send the link, a group chat included. You each take your own photos, and both videos end on the same card, such as Day 12 of 30.

The link carries the pact's name, your name, when it starts and how long it runs. No photo ever goes in it, and neither phone tells the other anything, so Becoming never says who's ahead. It's free at both ends.

Is it on iPhone?

Not yet. Becoming is Android only, for now.

Is this a fitness or medical app?

No. Becoming is a camera and a video tool. It measures nothing, tracks no health data, gives no advice, and makes no claim about what your photos show or what will happen next.

What doesn't it do today?

An honest list: no app lock, no self-timer, no automatic cloud backup (a folder your cloud app syncs does the job), no weekly photo schedule (reminders are daily), no nudging a single photo by hand, no date stamp on every frame (the video opens with your day count), no 4K, no choosing which face to follow in a group photo (it follows the largest), and no iPhone.

If one of these matters to you, tell us. The beta is where that gets decided.

Your photos and your privacy

Do I need an account? Are my photos uploaded?

No account, and no photo is uploaded. Becoming copies the photos you pick into its own storage on your phone, and photos you take in the app stay there, out of your gallery. Finding your face, lining up and making the video all happen on the phone.

Two companies receive a little technical information from the app, and neither receives a photo. The app asks RevenueCat, a service that checks purchases with Google Play, whether this phone has Plus, under an anonymous ID. And Google says ML Kit, the part that finds faces and bodies, sends Google the phone's model, the app's version, how fast it ran and any errors, under an ID made for this install.

What happens if I get a new phone, or lose this one?

In Settings › Your photos › Your archive, Export everything writes every photo from every project into a folder you pick, and Becoming can keep that folder up to date as you go. The first time you open Becoming on a new phone, tap Restore from a backup. It's free.

Because no photo is uploaded, a phone that's lost with no folder takes its photos with it, and uninstalling deletes them too. So keep a folder, ideally one your cloud app already syncs.

Is there a limit on photos or videos?

No. Keep as many photos as you take, and export your video as many times as you like.

Free, Plus and paying

Is Becoming really free?

Yes. Your photos, lining them up, your 1080p video with a small becoming.pics mark, and backups are free for good. Plus takes the mark off and adds more projects, Instagram and TikTok in one tap, every look and all the music.

What does Becoming Plus add?

As many projects as you like. Crop, colour and titles. Every before-and-after carousel, as pictures. Your video without our mark on it. Straight to Instagram and TikTok, clean, in one tap. Every look, from the first photo. All eighteen tracks, and your own music.

How much does Plus cost?

Google Play shows the price in your currency before you pay. It differs by country, so we don't print one here. There are two ways to buy: yearly, which may start with a free trial for new subscribers, or Forever, one payment that never renews. There is no monthly or weekly plan.

How does the free trial work? Will I be charged by surprise?

New subscribers to the yearly plan may get a free trial. Before you tap, the Plus screen shows how long it lasts, the yearly price and the day the first charge falls. If your notifications are on, your phone reminds you two days before it ends. Cancel during the trial in Google Play › Payments & subscriptions and you pay nothing.

If I stop paying for Plus, what happens to my videos?

You keep every project, photo, edit and carousel you made. A crop or a grade you set keeps working. A video you exported clean stays clean. Only new ones, and new clean exports, need Plus again.

Will it keep asking me to pay?

The Plus screen opens by itself at most twice: once when you finish setting up, with a big Continue free button, and once after you've watched your first video. From your thirtieth photo, Today shows one card about Plus that you can close for good. Apart from those three, it appears only when you tap something that's part of Plus, and that sheet starts by saying what stays free.

Is there a watermark?

Free videos carry a small becoming.pics mark from the very first export, so nothing changes later. Plus takes it off.

Sending straight to Instagram or TikTok in one tap is part of Plus, because those sends can only carry a clean video. On the free tier you save the video with the mark and post it yourself, wherever you like.
